my grandmother's name was Celie Cantave, daughter of Brevil Cantave and Amelie Frere. Brevil was the son of Jean Leonard Cantave. Apparently one of these two Cantaves was a military man who left numerous children all over the island. Legend has it that an ancester came from the Dominican side of the Island under the name Cantabre, which was later changed to Cantave.
I believe (but am not sure) that there is a tomb in the cemetery of Croix des Bouquets.My wife and I went to look at the graves there and tried to copy the inscriptions. It would be an interesting project for some one to register all those graves on line, they have a wealth of information.
Good luck with the search, it would be interesting to trace the offspring of the poular (with the ladies) general
