I was told that the Haist emigrating to Michigan wrote back to Canada saying his daughters were being teased because of the meaning of Haist (I don't know what the meaning is) and he asked those in Canada to help him change the spelling to Heist. If anyone knows what Haist refers to and why Heist would be better, please let me know.
