Hi Belinda,

Where is your Mary Hailstones listed in the 1841 census? The Mary listed as age 20 in West Calder on the 1841 census in Mary Watson, wife Francis Hailstones.

Isn't your Mary Hailstones, married Robert Gibson 8 Dec 1838 in Chirnside, listed on the 1841 census as living on Easter Crowbut, Chirnside, Berwick with her husband and two children: Margaret and Alison. According to LDS IGI, Margaret was born on 23 February 1839 and Alison christened on 21 February 1841. (There's no IGI birth record for Alison, only a christening record).

Have you been able to identify Mary's parents? (I always thought Mary was born in Berwick, since she was wed there.) Alison was also part of the naming tradition among the Berwick Hailstones already in the 1800s, whereas it did not become common in other parts of the Hailstones family, until my ggg grandfather married Alison Wilson. Even then, it remained a discrete tradition in my branch of the non-Berwick Hailstones. (If you look at the 1841 census for Berwick there are at least two Alison Hailstones listed there: The first Alison was b. 1838 Chirnside; the second, Alison Houliston b. 1821 Berwickshire, was living in Langton, Berwick.)

I ask because I am working on a spreadsheet of all of the Hailstones in the 1841 census, and realize that at one point you claimed your Mary Hailstones, married Robert Gibson, was from West Lothian Scotland and appeared there on the 1841 census. If you have some evidence that this was indeed the case, I would be quite interested in where on the 1841 census she might have resided in West Calder.

I can't fit her into the Midlothian/West Lothian/Lanark Hailstones and thus perhaps overlooked her somehow.

Please let me know,
Laura Crago
