James,
Nicholas Hale was one of my ancestors and lived in Lancaster Co., VA with his wife Mary(maiden name not proved). His will lists only 3 children. Mary, George and Nicholas. Perhaps there were others. Mary married Henry King and then Charles Merryman after Henry died. George changed his name to Heale. Nicholas asked in court to have his inheritance taken out of George's hands and put in Henry King's then in Charles Merryman's. Nicholas moved from VA to MD when Mary and her husband did. Then Nicholas2 changed his name to Haile. This Nicholas married Frances Garrett in what is now Baltimore Co., MD.
Among the children listed on the will of Nicholas2 was Nicholas--I number him as Nicholas3, who married Ann(or Anna)Long, daughter of Thomas Long and grand daughter of Col. Thomas Long. Nicholas 3 became for a short time a Quaker and took his wife and children(all b. in Baltimore Co.) to PA where one of his daughters married. He purchased slaves, and disenchanted with the Quakers, traveled up the Shenandoah to the break in the Blue Ridge Mts. and followed it to the Piedmont Plains of VA, east of the Blue Ridge. He was temporarily in Augusta Co., Lunenburg Co. and settled in the Bedford Co. area. Hale's Ford was named after the Hale/Haile family. Booker T. Washington was b. as a slave at Hale's Ford.
Among the children b. in Baltimore Co., MD was my ancestor, Meshack(Meshach), who m. Catherine Gibson. When Meshack made out his will in 1813 in Davidson Co., TN, he called all of his children by the Haile spelling of the name. Later, William and the rest, who changed the name dropped the i, becoming Hale as the 1st Nicholas was.
There have been various spellings in the same family--even adding an s at the end. I have seen references to the fact that part of the Haile/Hale family did go to the Carolinas, Georgia, MS and LA. I have not followed up that info.
Just be aware that a William Hale from a different line was a doctor and was advised by his father to move from New England to VA for better chance to increase his practice. So we have a Dr. William Hale and descendants in VA at the same time. My lineage for the Hale/Haile line is proved. Also, I have some of the northern Hale line but not through Dr. William Hale. Hope that explains the mix-up. Iris
