Does anyone have a descendant listing of Daniel Hale Anderson Co., SC and Benjamin Haile of Kershaw Co., SC?
I am seeking my elusive ancestor's parents. He was Henry Francis Hayles b. 1811 in SC according to census records. Family tradition is that he was from Sumter, SC which was passed down through his son, Henry Thomas Hayles.
One possibility is Joseph Hale and Letitia of Sumter, South Carolina.
Daniel Hale and Benjamin Haile both had sons within range the DOB of 1811.
The first record I have of Henry Francis Hayles comes from Lauderdale Co., Alabama where he mysteriously appears and marries Lucretia Marrs on 24 Aug 1834. In later probate records of her father, he is listed as Henry Hales, and the marriage record lists him as Henry Hayler. Later census records have other various spellings of his descendants.
After 1834, he next appears in Yalobusha Co., MS where he receives a Federal Land Patent on 5/20/1847 for 160 acres in Yalobusha Co. in the Southwest Quarter of Section 6, Township 25, Range 7 E. Such a large grant indicates that he had money at this time, probably coming from his Lucretia's father, John A. Marrs who was a wealthy merchant and plantation owner in Lauderdale County.
From probate records of Lauderdale Co., AL...
"was shot to death near Florence, AL"; the sale of his estate on 18 Oct 1834, recorded 18 Feb 1835 listed heirs, "his widow Nancy Marrs . . . and ten children: Alsy Rhodes wife of James Rhodes, Joseph C. Marrs, Elizabeth D. Murphey (a widow), Minerva B. Wilkes wife of Amos Wilkes [Jr.], Melvina G. Denson wife of Jesse Denson, Lucreatia S. Hale wife of Henry Hale, the following minor heirs for whom the widow is guardian: Nancy E. Marrs, Emily P. Marrs, Albert P. Marrs.
The estate included several tracts of land in Sections 17, 20, and 21, Twp. 2, Range 11 West:
N.W. 1/2 of Sect. 20 and W. 1/2 of N.E. 1/4, Sect. 20
Henry Francis Hayles next appears in the 1850 Yalobusha Co., Mississippi Census. He resided in Yalobusha County till his death in 1866.
My understanding of Daniel Hale and Benjamin Haile is that both of them had descendants who moved into Georgia and Alabama. According to family tradition, Henry Francis Hayles was a overseer on the plantation of Lucretia's father so his roots lay in slave farming.
