I have some copies of handwritten documents that state:
"Know all men by these presents that Reubin Hale - principal ... do acknowledge ourselves to owe and stated justly indebted to the Govenor of the State of Missouri in the sum of Three Hundred Dollars for the true payment of the same we bond ourselves our heirs and legal representatives firmly jointly and severally by their presents signed with our hands and sealed with our seals and dated this 3rd day of August A.D. 1841.
The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas Reuben Hale was appointed Guardian for John Hale, Joseph Hale, James C. Hale and George Hale, minor heirs of Reuben Hale."
The other document is similar except:
"The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas Reuben Hale was chosed Guardian by William Hale, Katharine Hale, Alexr Hale, Lucy Ann Hale heirs of the above Reuben Hale having arrived at the age of fourteen years and authorized to make such choice."
Both are signed: "Reuben Hail"
I also have three documents stating, all similar:
"Received of Reuben Hail Guardian for the heirs of Nancy Hail deceased nineteen dollars the full amount of my part of the estate of said Nancy Hail deceased. Received full satisfaction this 10th day of September 1842."
They are signed by William Hail, John C. McElroy (husband of Lucy Ann), and George Harmon (husband of Catharine).
One last document:
"An inventory of the Estate of Nancy Hail dcd.
To Cash Received --- One Hundred fifty dollars"
If anyone can explain these documents, I would be very thankful! Was Reuben these children's father? If so, why did he have to become Guardian. Was Nancy their mother? If so, who was their father? I am very confused!!! Thanks!
