Benjamin Haight in the Wing Cemetery

I hope this helps others avoid the frustration I have experienced in trying to track down documents for events which did not occur.

There is headstone in the Wing Cemetery (near Siegel in Barnett Township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania) inscribed “B. Haight,” reportedly the headstone of Benjamin Haight; “B. Haight” was born 7 Feb or 17 Feb or 18 Feb (according to various published transcriptions of the headstone); the years of age at death on the headstone were defaced but the 1820 Federal Census and 1840 Federal Census for Benjamin Haight showed he was born 1760-1770 (the only two census records we have found for him); a son’s 1880 Federal Census record showed Benjamin Haight was born in Connecticut; “B. Haight” died 18 Aug 1848 or 28 Aug 1843 or 29 Aug 1846 (according to various published transcriptions of the headstone).

Benjamin Haight (who reportedly married Phoebe) was NOT the son of Joshua Haight, Jr, and Martha Wing (as an entry shows on FamilySearch.org); the recorded births of their children and the will of Joshua Haight, Jr, show NO child named Benjamin.

Another entry on FamilySearch.org shows Benjamin Haight (buried in the Wing Cemetery) as Benjamin Haight (Jr) son of Benjamin Haight (Sr) and Elizabeth; there are NO documents or records that connect the Benjamin Haight who married Phoebe with Benjamin Haight (Jr), son of Benjamin Haight (Sr) and Elizabeth (born 17 Feb 1770, baptized 17 Jun 1770, according to the FamilySearch.org entry); there is NO birth record for Benjamin Haight, son of Benjamin Haight and Elizabeth, born on 17 Feb 1770; we can find NO baptism record for Benjamin Haight, son of Benjamin Haight and Elizabeth, baptized on 17 Jun 1770; in addition to the 17 Feb 1770 birth date the FamilySearch submitter also gave a birth date of 24 Dec 1769 and a Christening date of 17 Feb 1770 (in addition to the 17 Jun 1770 Christening date); baptism records from the time show that children were usually baptized within days of birth (to avoid an unbaptized infant dying and going to hell); to propose four months between birth and baptism at that time in Connecticut is not credible.

The submitter for the second FamilySearch entry wrote, “The only active lead I have for the parents of Benjamin Haight are Benjamin Haight and Elizabeth . . . no sources to verify or refute this relationship either.” There are NO SOURCES for the theory (or the FamilySearch entry) that says Benjamin Haight buried in the Wing Cemetery was the son of Benjamin Haight and Elizabeth; the entry should be considered a lead or a suggestion based on fabricated dates.

The recorded marriage in 1794 of a Benjamin Hoyt and Phoebe Rough MAY or MAY NOT be the marriage of the Benjamin and Phoebe Haight reportedly buried in the Wing Cemetery; we have NO records of Phoebe’s maiden name and we have NO documentation that actually showed her name was Phoebe (as her reported headstone in the Wing Cemetery said only “P. Haight,” with the date of death and no indication of age).

Good luck to all legitimate researchers of this Haight family.
