The following article was in the "Viroqua Censor" late March 1914. WISCONSIN
"TRAGIC FATE OF A VIROQUA DOCTOR" Secondary headline is in subject line above."This community has experiencied many distressing afflictions, but in our recollection that has brought deeper anguish to family and people than that what overtook Dr. Martin Hagen, last Sunday afternoon, when he lost his life,as with the twinkling of an eye. There was no witnesses to the awful tragedy, it having occurred on Hornby Hill, 2 miles south of the city as he was proceeding home after having visited a patient on Dach(sp?) Ridge. he was driving a single horse, which from all indications must have become frightened and unmanageble, leaving the level road at the top of the hill, dashing down over banks and stones, the buggy dropping into a rocky ravine, demolishing it, and Dr.Martin Hagen apparently thrown over the dash board and kicked by the horse or received his fatal injuries by falling upon rocks, his skull being factured and other bruises inflicted. The animal freed herself from the rig and ran toward town, W.M. Crume stopping her at his place and immediately followed south to find the doctor in the throes of death, breathing and moaning slightly after Crume arrived. Assistance was summoned and Dr. Trowbridge, Minshall, and Sorenson were promptly driven to the spot but life was extinct before they arrived. Indications were he never realized anything after the accident.
The remains of Dr.Hagen were conveyed to his home, where sympathizing friends and neighbors had assenbled to comfort the distracted wife.Funeral will be held this Thursday morning in the United Lutheran Church at 8:30, remains then taken to Cashton by train, services at Moen church conducted by Revs.Hofstead and Rondestevt, former speaking in English ,latter in Norweigian.
Martin Hagen was 41 years old, a native of Norway, early an orphan, he made his way to this country when 17 years of age, locating at Cashton, where he hesistated not; to do such work as came to him. His ambition was to be a physician; by persistency and patience he conquered." end of article.
