This is a restated inquiry, seeking additional information on the Hagaman family of Monmouth County, NJ, in the early 1800s.

John Hagerman bought property in the Shark River Village area of what was then Shrewsbury Township in 1814. He died in about 1828-1829 and left widow Phebe and children Hester b. c. 1811, Catherine b. c. 1812, James b. c. 1813, George L. b. c. 1815, Jane b. c. 1929, and John P. Hagerman b. c. 1825. Hester married David Morton, Catherine married John Talmadge, James married Catherine Herbert of Howell in 1834, George E. married Eliza White, and Jane married Eden Howland. John P. L. moved west in the 1850's and married Mary Harmon in Kenosha, WI. Except for John P.L., all of the children of John and Phebe stayed in Monmouth County. John’s widow Phebe lived until sometime in the 1850's, and from census records it appears she was born c. 1795.

John Hagerman may have been the son of a James Hagerman, one of the first four Hagermans to appear in Monmouth County between the 1790's and 1814 (the others were Barent, Dallance, and Cornelius). The 1793 Militia Census for Monmouth County shows a James Hagerman and a Johnson Hagerman.

Jim LaLone's very impressive Descendants of Adrien Hagaman documents four generations, down to the end of the 18th century, and there are numerous Dallances, Barents, and Cornelius’s, so clearly the newcomers of those names to Monmouth County were of this family. A John Hagaman is also listed, son of Jan
Hegeman/Hagerman/Hagaman of Jamaica, L.I., who d. in 1829, but who is listed as having m. a Mary ______. This being the last generation of the report, no further details are given.

It is tantalizing to consider that the John Hagaman of Jim LaLone’s report, and our John Hagerman of Monmouth Co., may be the same man, but we have not been able to make this connection. The widow Phebe, who d. after 1850, could have been John’s second wife, since his first child, Hester, was b. when Phebe was only 16, and there is a 14 year gap between John’s fourth and fifth children, which could have been a period of widowerhood. Our John was likely b. before c. 1793, possibly several years earlier, to have had a child in 1811, and this is reasonably consistent with Jim LaLone’s John Hagaman, whose father d. in 1781. But most of this is speculation. In fact we have not yet been able to document any connection between the Monmouth Co. John Hagerman and these or any other members of the Adrien Hagaman family.

Can anyone help with this problem?
