Notes for WILLIAM THEOPHOLIS FRY:
He was a Tuscarawas Co., Ohio schoolteacher. He was School Supertendant in Daviess and Montgomery Co., IN. In summer of 1867 William was elected Superintendent of Uhrichsville School district in Ohio and paid $60.00 per month. He was re-elected in 1868 and his salary increased to $80.00 per month. He continued as Superintendant until 1870. Superintendant of Crawfordsville, Montgomery Co., IN. schools in 1882, the boys of 1882 inscribed a large granite field boulder which laid in the corner of the Crawfordsville High School on St. Road 47 South on which is this inscription :Boys of 82 {1882} To Supt. W. Fry. The following is from Crawfordsville paper dated Oct. 7, 1898 : There is a between- the- lines echo of grim humor in this new announcement from the local high-school, found in a newspaper of the elegant eighties vintage : The High School presented Superintendant Fry with an elegant gold- headed cane yesterday afternoon. The presentation speech was madeby Mort Keegan. A. S. Custer, on behalf of the teaching staff, also presentedSuperintendent Fry with a large comfortable arm chair with the remark that henceforth after the Professor had subduded some of his recalcitrant pupils with one of his well known and vigorous canings, he would need some place to rest. Hence the propriety of presenting him with a chair as well as a new cane. Superintendant Fry made a speech of grateful acceptance. He served 3 years in the civil war and spent 18 months in Libby prision at Richmond, VA and in Anderson prision in Georgia. His family says he would never talk about the horrors of the war. Two of his brothers, David Peter and Benjamin Franklin {after who William named one of his sons}lost their young lives to the war. William was enlisted in Company D, 11th, in 1861, for about 4 months, his father died and he returned to Ohio and taught school that winter. He then re-enlisted in Co. H, 18th, for 3 years. He was in battle of Stone River, Hoover's Gap, and Chickamauga. In this last battle he was captured and put in prision.

ix. DAVID PETER FRY, b. September 18, 1841, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio; d. March 07, 1866, Gnadenhutten,Tuscarawas Co., Ohio.
Notes for DAVID PETER FRY:
Family records say he died in service. The Cemetery records say he diedMarch 7,1861. He was a member of Company A, 51st Ohio. There was evidently a tie between the brothers, David Peter and Benjamin. Both served in the 51st and Benjamin willed everything he had to David, and both ended up dying in the war. They also had a nephew, Allen Fry { son of Enoch Fry, who was son of Samuel Fry and first wife Sarah Simmers} who served in the Ohio 51st. Allen died from disease during service on May 7, 1863 at Murfreesboro, TN. Samuel Fry lost 2 sons and 1 grandson to the war.
