Hello,
I just read a post you left on genealogy.com dated 3/28/2003.I have a link from a page regarding genealogy for Cornelius Hafley pasted below.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnkin/people/haf.htmhttp://www.rootsweb.com/~tnkin/people/haf.htm
I hope this is helpful. This link includes information specifically on Cornelius Hafley and Mary Elizabeth Miser (not Meiser). They were of Presbyterian faith as were many Scottish and Scots-Irish immigrants at the time.
My grandmother is Lillie Mae Hafley, daughter of Thomas T. Hafley of Casey Co., Kentucky. Our family history records that we are descendants of Jacob Hafley, a Revolutionary War veteran, who was of Scottish descent. There are many errors in most genealogical sites/posts that I have come across which confuse our line with German immigrants named Havelick, Hofflich, Meiser, Linebach, and others.Scholarly historical resources indicate that during the 1700's the Scottish and Germans came to America. However, they were primarily of different faiths, spoke different languages, and migrated to different areas of America. They rarely intermarried because of such strong differences present during this time.
The Hafleys of Casey Co., Kentucky have lived there since 1805.They traveled with and intermarried into other Scottish families who also continue to reside in Casey Co.The names of these families were Russell (aka Russel), Sutherland (aka Southerland), and Ellis.(My particular lineage includes the Scottish family names of Airth/Arth/de Arth, Fergusson, Hogue/Hogg, McInery, Ellis, Russell, and Hafley.)Most likely, all of these families were either Scots-Irish or Convenanters who were forced to come to America in the mid-to-late 1700's, primarily due to religious and ethnic persecution by the English.
Because of past persecution, our family has passed down accounts of the use of various pseudonyms used by the Hafley family.Husbands, wives, and children often reported different spellings and variations of the name Hafley. These included Hafley, Hafly, Haffley, McHaffly, Mahaffley, Mahaffy, Mahaffey, McHafley, Mehaffey, and McCaffery.
Some excellent resources that support the movement of Scottish immigrants and Scottish history at the time of Jacob Hafley's lifetime are:
1.How the Scots Invented the Modern World by Arthur Herman (2001).
2.The Scotch Irish:A Social History by James G. Leyburn (1962).
I have other names in my Hafley line if you would like this information. Please email me if you would like to have this data.
Sincerely,
Dr. Gina De Arth-Pendley
