Haffey in Donaghmore.
I have evidence of a Luke Haffey in Donaghmore from the period 1821-1830: Donaghmore is a parish in County Down. It is confusing because the record shows a Luke Haffey in Donaghmore in Cargobane as well as a Luke Haughey (Catholic) in Tullymurry. I am wondering if they are the same. The reason I think this is that Luke Haughey may have had associations with Cargobane, and he was Catholic as far as I can tell. Luke died in Lockport Illinois in 1860. Haffey may have been an alternative to Haughey, Luke (b. 1788) had three sons, two of which later changed their surnames: one to Hawkins and one to Hoy. Luke Haughey was mentioned in Harshaw's diary, and may have known about riots which occurred in the area of Down/Armagh circa 1834 in which a man was shot by police. This may have precipitated a name change for anonymity. Luke had twelve children, six of whom died in infancy or youth. He appeared to have a rootless existence. His father was Patrick (b. 1751), his brothers were Michael (b. 1794), Daniel (b. 1791) and he had an aunt Rosa (b.1800). It would make sense for his brothers to name their children either Michael, Patrick or Luke. I am trying to trace Luke's uncles forward, this is why I am interested in your Michael Haffey. Do you have a townland? Parents names? My US destinations/associations include Michigan, Illinois, Erie Canal, Civil War, Mexican-American War, Indian Wars. The record is online at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donaghmore1/donaghmore/cofi.html, you can also access it by running a google search on "haffey donaghmore".
