We were looking for a Daniel Hatfield born circa 1835 in Newcastle on Tyne, England and his wife Anne Hyndes (born Ireland 1811) but dates we had about their arrival in Australia never matched up. Then we came across information from the Robertson Family Tree leading us to two Hebrew brothers born in Poland (Prussia)who for reasons unknown to us ended up in England. Due to details matching, ie, the wife is correct, we do believe these to be our relatives but would like further confirmation of facts. Daniel was born in 1795 and Joseph was born in 1799. From Robertson Family Tree Noted as a merchant on dc of Henry George Hatfield. Daniel Hadfield, aged 37 arrived on the "Parmelia" 16 November 1832 as a convict. Occupation as a soldier/hawker. Seven years for false pledging. Tried Lancashire Quarter Sessions on 24 October 1831.No former convictions. Notes from Paul Robertson. Daniel Hadfield : Tried Lancashire Quarter Sessions for false pledging on 24 October 1831. Transported for seven years. Arrived Sydney from England on the "Parmelia" ý(Master, James Gilbert)ý 16 November 1832. Certificate of Freedom 8 May 1839. Age 16 November 1832 was 37 years. Description. Reads only. Jewish - single, a native of Prussia ý(Poland)ý. Soldier/Hawker. Height 4'7". Dark, sallow complexion. Black hair mixed with grey. Chestnut eyes. Nose flat from blow. Scars on the back of the left hand. A further description has him at 5'5". Bridge of nose flat from fracture, swelling over left eyebrow, scars on back of left hand. In 1843, Daniel was declared insolvent, and in 1844 he applied for relief. Depositions by his creditors indicated that he lied about real estate holdings, which encouraged the to allow him credit. Under oath he denied these allegations. ý(see Barbara Gospel p 7)ý. Died in a sulky accident in a country town west of Sydney. Partly confirmed by a Coroner's inquest into the death of Daniel Hatfield ý(AO Reel 2921 - Nov 1852 to April 1859 - inc Nos 6899-11945. Location of Original 4/6613)ý The Actual report has not survived, only the entry in the Registrar which reads "Daniel Hatfield - Visitation from God No 9184 Sydney 5 October 1855. Coroner, C Brennan 29 November 1855". There was no inquest for Ann Hatfield, and no dc for Daniel. The is no evidence of where the accident occurred or where he was buried. Information on Joseph From Robertson Family Tree Noted in "These are The Names" at p 247. Brother of Daniel Hadfield, received a Certificate of Freedom on 11 May 1838 and was listed as a voter in the first municipal elections in Sydney in 1842, with a house in Bathurst Street. He was born in Poland in 1799, and was sentenced to seven years at Knutsford in Cheshire in 1830. Came to NSW aboard the "Camden" in 1831. Although listed as Jewish on court records we found records at the NAA of one of their descendents where they identify themselves as 'Hebrew'. The fellow who compiled the Robertson Family Tree unfortunately passed away just before we made contact, so it has been left to his wife to sort it all out. We're hoping someone else may be able to verify this information and let us know where we can get copies of documents etc. We also would like to contact Barbara Gospel who apparently has information on this line.
