Martin V Haddeman / Minor Millman
Martin was born 25 Aug 1841 in Livingston Co, NY, the last child of Benjamin and Elizabeth Haddeman.
I have found Martin listed by name in the 1850 US census living in St. Joseph Co, MI with his father and sister Phebe Lodema. Again in the 1855 Cross Plains, Dane Co, WI census again with his father and sister. According to his Civil War miliatry papers, he was living with the family of Louis Garrard as a farmer's helper in Orlando, Cook Co, IL before he enlisted. Louis Garrard is found in the 1860 US Census in that location with his wife, children and 3 brothers but no Martin Haddeman listed as he appears with his father in that census so he must have been there only for a short period of time sometime after the census was taken in 1860 but before he enlisted in Nov 1861.
His military records also show him as 5 ft 8 in tall, dark complexion, eyes hazel, hair dark brown and his occupation as a farmer. Martin enlisted on 13 Nov 1861 in Wilmington, IL and was a private in Co E, 39th IL infantry. He was wounded twice. 2 June 1864 near Ware Bottom Church, WA were his little finger on his left hand was shot off and again on 9 April 1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA were he was shot in the right ankle joint and lost part of his right heel. He musterd out with his company on 6 Dec 1865. He then returned to Cross Plains, Dane Co, WI after the war.
Shortly after his return, family stories are that he was wanted as a horse thief so he fled and assumed the name of his commanding officer during the Civil War, Minor Millman. During that era, they hung horse thieves so if true he had just reason to fear for his lefe. Some basic facts can be verifed. Martin V Haddeman's commanding officer during the war was indeed Capt. Minor Millman. Martin V Haddeman's military records do acknowledge he claimed a pension for his wounds received during the Civil War and the government after some time was satisfied that his wounds did match those of Martin V Haddeman's and granted his claim which they paid to him under Minor Millman's name which he used the rest of his life. As to the reason he changed his name, we have no direct evidence. There is no record of Martin V Haddeman after his discharge other than his military pension records which are sealed except to provable family members because of the name discrepency. In his pension records in trying to prove to the government who he actually was, Martin/Minor listed his father and mother by name, Benjamin and Elizabeth Haddeman, along with siblings: Harriet, John, William, Isaiah, Josiah, Harry, Henry, and Lodama.
He married under the name of Minor Millman and all his children bor this surname. Minor Millman died 21 May 1922 in Cove, Union Co, OR. He is buried at the Cove Cemetery.
