1895: Walter Hackney, fireman, lost his life between Crawfordville & Barnett, GA
An accident occurred on the Georgia railroad last Saturday morning by which Mr. Walter Hackney, a fireman on a freight train, lost his life. It occurred about the 61 mile post between Crawfordville and Barnett. As the train was flying down grade the coupling that held the engine ran ahead, leaving the tender and twelve freight cars following behind. Fireman Hackney was in the act of stepping from the engine to the tender for a shovel load of coal when the coupling broke and was precipitated to the track below. The freight car passed over him, mangling his body in a horrible manner.
