Eighty-persons identified as gypsies were counted in the 1870 census for the town of Hanover, Hanover Township, Jefferson County, Ind.

They were not there in 1860 or 1880. I am not related to these lines, but am interested in local history and am curious about when they arrived and left Hanover.

Many of the families had children born in Ohio in the 1850s and 1860s, but I have not located them in those censuses. Five of the households were headed by Young/Youngs and one person of that surname was in another household. Thirty-seven of these gypsies carried the surname Young/Youngs.

Distinctive names included Whyte Young/Youngs(two of them) and Pablo Young.
