GWINN Mr. Abner Gwinn, age 104 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Thursday, September 6, 2007, at Capital Region Medical Center. He was born December 9, 1902, at Stockton, Mo., the son of R. L. "Pop" Gwinn and Dora Buckles Gwinn. He was married in 1933 to Vivian Juanita Comstock of Unionville, Mo., who preceded him in death. He was married in 1973 to Opal R. Gwinn, of Jefferson City, Mo., who survives of the home. Mr. Gwinn graduated from Simonsen High School in 1919, and from the University of Missouri in 1925 with a degree in Civil Engineering and Structural Design. During that time, he had four years of R.O.T.C. leading to four years of service in the Army Reserves. His employment with the Missouri State Highway Department began in 1923 where he worked as a resident engineer until his retirement in 1970. During this time, he was on leave one year for studies and for two years during World War II worked as resident engineer for the St. Louis firm of Horner and Shifrin for all improvements and additions at Ft. Leonard Wood. Following World War II, he was appointed Director of the State Park System, 1946-1954, during which time three National Park Recreation Centers were transferred to the State, and also other parks. He was a member of the First Christian Church where he was a past board member of Deacon Emeritus. He was an 82 year member of the Jefferson City Lodge No. 43 A.F. & A.M. and a charter member of the DeMolay Order and a 58 year member of the Order Eastern Star, Victoria Chapter #14. Besides his life's work in engineering, he was also active in civic, cultural, professional and fraternal organizations. He was appointed to the original Planning and Zoning Committee, the Memorial Community Hospital Site Committee, and the Committee to establish a Jefferson City Concert Association. He was a registered professional engineer and a charter member of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers. He is survived by his wife, Opal Gwinn, of the home; his sister-in-law, Mary Jane Gwinn of St. Louis, Mo.; a nephew, Richard Gwinn and his wife Kay, of Evansville, Indiana; and many great nephews and nieces. Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. Monday at the Buescher Memorial Home, 429 E. Capitol Ave., Jefferson City, followed by a Masonic Service at 7 p.m. under the auspices of the Jefferson Chapter No. 43, A.F. & A.M. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 11, 2007, at the Buescher Memorial Home with the Rev. Donald Carter officiating. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church or to the Masonic Lodge, Jefferson Chapter No. 43, A.F. & A.M. Arrangements are under the direction of the Buescher Memorial Home.
