I am studying Native American history and the politcal climate of the 1800's in the Yosemite area of California.
As you are aware, William M Gwin (along with John C Fremont) were the first two Senators for California. During my research I discovered there was a township named Gwin. It was located in either Merced or Mariposa county. "Gwin" also housed one of the first three post offices. The record I found mentions a Michael Gwin as the person whom the town was named for. Was he also relative of your and the Senator? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
