Here is an even earlier reference of Thomas Guthrie in Halifax Co. which I found in SLC.
Source Halifax Co. VA deed books abstracted by Marian Dodson Chiarito Vol 2 "3 Apr 1766 Bk 2 Pg 343 John CALDWELL & wife Barbery of Halifax Co. to Peter ROGERS of same 160 ac on waters of Lawson Cr beg at Lawson's corner pine thence south...all woods, underwoods etc. Signed John CALDWELL, Barbra CALDWELL Wit: Joseph TURNER, Wm HARDING, Thomas CASON, Thomas GUTEREY. Recorded 21 Aug 1766"
