Thanks Debbie! After I posted my theory, someone sent me an e-mail pointing out that John Ashby who married the Reading female had gone to Ohio, Indiana, or somewhere up that way and that the two marriages were for separate men. On an 1850 census extract, Mourning Guthrie Ashby was listed as being 49 years of age so that threw up a red flag making me think she might have been John Ashby's daughter rather than his wife but subsequent listings in the 1860/1870 censuses point out the error.
