Just wanted to point out to you, that the two John Ashby's you mention are not the same man....John W Ashby and wife Mourning are alive and well in the 1850 census of Stokes Co NC. Thus it appears Mourning's huband, John is not from the family of Joseph Ashby and not from Halifax County VA at all. Still seeking answers..perhaps in nearby Caswell Co NC.
