One last thing then if you feel the census information is wrong........John Guthrie didn't marry until 1785 while still a resident of Cumberland County, VA. If he did things in a correct sequence, then Mourning Guthrie would have been born some three years before he married. You may never find a record to support the parentage but my money would be on Travis Guthrie who left the Cumberland family at an early age and had first mention in the Halifax Co. records in 1768. A 1782 birth date would mesh with the ages of his known children much better than with those of John Guthrie (if that would apply at all). Recent DNA tests show that a Travis descendant was a 66 of 67 match to a William Guthrie descendant of Cumberland Co. so it's safe to say that William and Travis were brothers (supported by the will and family documents of old Thomas Guthrie of Cumberland). John Guthrie is also known to be a son of old Thomas (and youngest, I believe) so it would follow that he might leave Cumberland and relocate to Halifax Co. to be near an older brother. A descendant of John Guthrie of Halifax Co. has yet to be tested on his DNA but I'm almost positive that whenever done, those results will match results from descendants of Travis and William perfectly. Travis and John were the only Guthries in the northern district. DNA tests on Thomas, Charles, and Nathaniel descendants of the southern district of Halifax Co. (late 18th century) have already been done and do not match those of Travis Guthrie in the northern district. Notify Administrator about this message?
