In looking back over my notes, don't rule John Guthrie completely out as father of Mourning. The 1836 document does not list her as an heir but I think she's probably
not living at that time. The Mourning in the 1850 Census
with John Ashby at 77 years of age is his daughter, not his wife. Looking back at the 1840, 1830, and 1820 Censuses, it can be reasonably assumed that Mourning Guthrie Ashby was alive at the time of the 1820 Census (based on female age in the household) but not alive in subsequent censuses.
With the Ashbys living very close to Travis Guthrie in the northern district of Halifax Co., VA., and her having married in that county, I'm almost positive that she would belonged to either Travis or John; but most likely Travis. The notion of her being from Cumberland Co. (some 75 miles away) doesn't carry much substance, in my opinion.
