For all researchers of GUTHRIE in late 18th century Virginia, know that the 1790, 1800, and 1810 US Censuses were destroyed for that state in the War of 1812. That makes your research exceedingly difficult as those were key years for most all researchers to have information available. In 1782, Virginia began requiring tithables to be registered in its efforts to collect personal property taxes and those efforts continued until 1930. Most of those records have survived but are sporatic in nature. One year (1787) appears to be complete for all the counties of Virginia and can serve as a census, of sorts, as all people of 16 years and beyond who held taxable property were supposedly recorded for the purposes of the lists. If you connect with any of these known tithables, check with the Library of Virginia to see if personal property tax lists are available for years other than 1787 in the county where your Guthrie of interest was living. My ancestors were in Halifax Co., Virginia at that time and the tax lists there ran from 1782 to 1930 with only 1818 and 1864 missing; both because lists were not required by the state in those years. Keep in mind that this doesn't necessarily represent all adult Guthries but those who had tax responsibilities. For example, Mary Guttry is listed as a tithable in 1787 Halifax Co., VA. Her husband, Thomas Guthrie, had died the previous year and her only son, Cason Guthrie (who was then 27 years old and married) was living with her at this 1787 enumeration but was not listed because he was not the tithable responsible for taxes in that household. By 1788, the roles seemingly had been reversed and Cason Guthrie became the responsible party then and thereafter. The Guthries and name variants of 1787 Virginia were as follows: GUTHIRE, Adam - Nelson County GUTHREY, Joseph -Frederick County GUTHRIE, Richard /Mary/Major/James/William/Richard, Jr. - King & Queen County GUTHRIE, James - Jefferson County (now Kentucky) GUTHRIE, George - Gloucester County GUTHRIE, Samuel - Middlesex County GUTHRIE, John/Robert/John - Rockbridge County GUTHRY, Traverse - Halifax County (Traverse is known to be Travis) GUTREY, Moses - Campbell County GUTTERY, Henry/Thomas/William/John/Alexander/Bernerd - Cumberland County (Bernerd is known to be Bernard) GUTTERY, Thomas - Stafford County GUTTERY, William/Nathaniel - Amherst County GUTTERY, Daniel - Rockingham County GUTTERY, Francis/Alexander - Botetourt County GUTTERY, Benjamin - Fayette County (now Kentucky) GUTTERY, Penelope/John/David - Franklin County GUTTORY, Thomas - Orange County GUTTRIE, William - Caroline County GUTTRY, James - Bedford County GUTTRY, Mary - Halifax County (known to be spouse of Thomas who died NOV 1786) GUTTRY, James - Botetourt County Now, from my experience with Halifax County, free blacks (FN: free negroes) who took the name of previous slave owners named Guthrie seemed to always have the name spelled as Guthridge/Gutheridge/etc. or, otherwise, list takers so designated them with that spelling. This designation of "FN" continued to be used up until the time of the War Between The States. In Halifax County, all of these people were black but that may not be the case in all counties so I will list all for the state of Virginia in 1787. They are: GUTRIDG, Thomas - Fauquier County GUTRIDGE, John/James - Bourbon County (now Kentucky) GUTRIDGE, Samuel - Amherst County GUTTERIDG, Allen/Richard/William - Fauquier County GUTTRIDGE, Ann - Westmoreland County Notify Administrator about this message?
