Back in the 1950's my grandfather's brother, Chesley Guthery of Cullman Co AL, put together a little bit of our family tree. It had four generations of history which went Chesley, son of William, son of David, son of Henry. Since that time his daughter started researching in the 1960's . She is of my father's generation. Still we had only those four generations. In the 1980's I joined the search along with several cousins. We still only had those four generations until this week, 54 years later.
After about 20 years of searching, I became frustrated that we could not prove connection of Henry Guttry to his father, our prime suspect being Henry Guttery who married Penelope Johnson in Louisa Co, VA. I joined forces with Larry J. Guthrie in 2004 to start the Guthrie DNA project at family tree DNA here in Houston, TX. We started gathering potential DNA donors and started our project focusing on those with ties to Virginia, Georgia, Alabama, and the Carolina's. (Currently 52 members in the project) Well, we had matches but we only used the 12 marker test on the first pass, which only showed common ancestors within 40 generations. Not really useful. So we moved up to the 37 and 67 marker test and discovered Larry and I had a common ancestor within 5 or 6 generations.
Larry's oldest proven ancestor was Garritt Guthrie. And I had Henry who we suspected was son of Henry and Penelope Guthrie, that Henry was a nephew to a Garritt Guthrie. So we are fairly certain we have the right family in Virginia. But we still didn't have any paper trail to go with it.
This week a cousin in Ohio suggested I communicate with a cousin in Tennessee because she had some data and questions, and shared her email address. What she had was the Rev War pension file of David Guttery who married Mary Booth and moved to South Carolina. In the file were the Bible pages David and Mary had removed from their Bible and sent to prove information to get a pension. That is unusual enough; but, David made a note in his Bible about the birth of his younger brother Henry. He also made an entry of the death of his father. That is the proof document I now have to prove that my Henry was indeed the son of Henry and Penelope (Johnson) Guttery, son of John and Mary (Shay) Guttery (Parents of Garrett), son of John and Eliza (Basket) Guttery (John being an immigrant born in Scotland.)
One footnote, we were able to get a DNA sample from a direct male descendant of the ancient ancestor, David Guthrie, in Scotland who built the castle with our family name. We matched DNA with him also and can claim the castle as part of our heritage, along with being descendants of Robert the Bruce, first King of Scotland.
So it took over 50 years and technology improvement to get us here but we made it. Our line below.
