Yes, I saw that post and believe Debbie Woods was posing the Henry Guthrey suggestion as a speculative question.
Travis Guthrie was, essentially, a neighbor to John W. Ashby when the 1798 personal property tax lists were compiled for Halifax Co., VA. so he was certainly close
to where Mourning lived if, in fact, she was a daughter of Travis Guthrie, as I suspect. My experience is that young females generally married where they lived (in this case
Halifax Co.) but sometimes eloped to a neighboring county.
However, Cumberland County is some 75 miles from Halifax County so I'm betting an elopment didn't happen.
I'll make matters worse for researchers of this line though as I suspect that Mourning Guthrie might not have been the first marriage for John W. Ashby. He was clearly out on his own when the 1798 tax lists were compiled and more times than not, such a listed person was married and raising a family; otherwise, I've found that most remained in the household of their parents. I agree with what I've read by Clayton Collins about Joseph Ashby almost certainly having to be the father of John W. Ashby and won't go further in that discussion because Joseph appears to be the only Ashby
in Halifax County in the time that would concern John W. Ashby. The marriage date for John Ashby and Mourning Guthrie was 1 JAN 1802 in Halifax Co., VA. A few years later, there was another marriage for John Ashby and Elizabeth Reading on 9 NOV 1808. I believe these two marriages are for the same John Ashby and that Mourning Guthrie Ashby had died in the interim. Joseph Ashby seems to be the only candidate as father for John W. Ashby in Halifax County and he would not have had two sons named John
so I'm thinking these two Johns in the marriage records are for the same person. The children of John W. Ashby born after 1808 would belong to Elizabeth Reading Ashby and there were Readings in Halifax County.
Elias Ashby and family are living in Stokes Co., NC in 1850 along with John Ashby and I think Elias to be a son. He was 50 years of age in this census, yielding a birth year of 1800. That's two years before the Guthrie marriage and eight years before the Reading marriage so my thinking is that John Ashby was married when that 1798 Halifax personal property tax list was compiled; a time when he was listed as a stand alone tithable. Elias Ashby would seem to be a product of this suggested first marriage. John Ashby was listed as 77 years of age in this same census.
