While assembling the information for Charles Guthrie, a few items came to light that may require further research. Charles and Nathaniel Guthrie (thought to be brothers) both came to Halifax Co., VA. from another area in 1792, as that's the first year they were recorded on the yearly personal property tax lists for that county. Once there, they remained on those tax lists until 1826 and 1818, respectively. Considering potential and known marriage dates, births of children, etc., it appears that Charles Guthrie might be the older of the two men. Nathaniel was first married to Margaret Mann, ca. 1794, and secondly, to Frances "Fanny" Link, ca. 1798. A female child was born of this first union in 1795. The first child of the second marriage was born in 1801, and others, thereafter. The first child of Charles Guthrie with a specific date of birth (1794) was Vincent Guthrie. However, there appears to be two sons older than Vincent according to the dates that they were listed as tithables (16 years of age or above) in the Halifax Co., VA. lists......Patrick Guthrie and William Guthrie. That being considered, I would say that Charles Guthrie was already married when he moved to Halifax Co., VA. in 1792. If married in 1790, and with possibly some children already born, he should have been recorded in the 1790 Census somewhere. The 1790 Census for Virginia was destroyed by the British in the war of 1812 but has been reconstructed using personal property tax lists for practically all the counties of that state. There was no Charles Guthrie to be found in the Virginia records. A search of the 1790 Census records of North Carolina turns up one Charles, a "Charles Gutry" in the Virginia border county of Surry Co., NC. This Charles Gutry has one male over 16 years of age (himself) and three females in his household (likely wife and two daughters). This person probably was married in the 1780s and is, in my opinion, the same Charles that came to Halifax Co., VA. in 1792.
