Hi Bessie,

Since you live close to a courthouse and you say you are a "newbie" at geneaology....possibly you could look up something very easy and share with the list. If you find something, it should prove very helpful to you.

Go to the REGISTER OF DEEDS office at the Courthouse....that is where all the DEEDS of land exist ALL the way back to the beginning of time. (They are available to the public because that is what title searches do...they trace the land down to present day owners to make sure there are no defects in the title.)

When you get there, ask for the OLDEST GRANTOR INDEX book.
The INDEX lists all the sellers (Grantor) of land from the very beginning of time in that County. (It may not list deeds that past by the way of a will but eventually that land will show up when it is sold by someone in the family...maybe 2-3 generations later. Anyway, Look for GUTHRIE in the Index book (GRANTOR) and see if any of them particularly have "et al" listed after that name. that means there is LOTS of other people's names in that deed...could be division of property when someone dies. If so, it lists ALL the relationships.

You may have to ask nicely to a clerk to help you, after you find the first one, to show you how to find it. (You simply go to the Deed Book (which is another book) and look up volume # and page # that was listed in the Index book).

Now that is a GREAT way to find your ancestors, particuraly if you know they owned land. NOW...if you get more adverturesome you should ALSO look at the GRANTEE Index book. This is the "reverse" of the Grantor book. It is the person(s) who PURCHASED the land. So, sometimes there is a lot of folks who purchase, and then Quit claim deeds are issued and by the time the land is sold you don['t see all the names. I suggest you do this. Kind of know (from your tax bills) what the division and parcel ofland tht ayou live on is called. They can look that up in the books but it's harder for you to do and they may not "want" to be as helpful with that suggestion. So I suggest you start
with asking

1. Where's your oldest GRANTOR DEED INDEX book? How far does it go back in time? If I find something, where are the Deed books kept?

Enjoy...let me know if you find anything. I have a GERMAN Guthrie (yes his first name is German) that dies in Chathm Co, NC....don't know where we came from. He named a son William and James (born about 1795-1808...probably in Fayette, NC (Fayetteville). I know a lot of them AFTER that but not up in your area.

Have fun. Let us know what you learned.

Helen
