I'm attempting to separate the Guthrie factions in Halifax Co., VA. so that future researchers won't have to spend lots of time trying to determine relationships among those factions. I have already posted my determinations about the Travis Guthrie and John Guthrie (Rev. War pensioner) lines who resided in the northern district of the county just prior to 1800. Travis Guthrie was there as early as 1768 and John Guthrie moved there in 1792 from Cumberland Co., VA. In the 1790s, there can be found three Guthries in the southern district: Cason Guthrie, Charles Guthrie, and Nathaniel Guthrie. We know from the 1786 will of Thomas Guthrie (in Halifax Co. as early as 1769) that Cason Guthrie was his only son. From Guthrie DNA tests, we know that a descendant of Nathaniel Guthrie and a descendant of Thomas Guthrie are NOT related. Further, we know that a descendant of Nathaniel Guthrie and a descendant of Charles Guthrie are related, as determined by DNA tests. It has always been thought that Nathaniel and Charles Guthrie were brothers and that would seem to be the case.....but if not, surely from a common ancestor. Lastly, the DNA results for a descendant of the Nathaniel Guthrie line do NOT match the descendant of the Travis Guthrie line in the northern district......NOR does the DNA results for a descendant of the Thomas Guthrie in the southern district match either of those tested participants. The one line that still needs testing would be a participant from the John Guthrie line, the Revolutionary War pensioner of Halifax Co., VA. I feel sure that the results from that family will match those of the participant from the Travis Guthrie line as I'm comfortable in saying John Guthrie was a younger brother of Travis Guthrie of Halifax. Previous tests on a Travis Guthrie descendant match (66 of 67 alelles) those of a subject who is a known descendant of William Guthrie of Cumberland Co., VA. William Guthrie, of course, was a son of Thomas Guthrie of Cumberland Co., per his will. Here's what I believe to be the descendants of Charles Guthrie who first appears in Halifax Co., VA. 1791-1792: CHARLES GUTHRIE born 1750-1770 (1830 Census lists his age as 70-80 but I don't think he was that old, judging by the births of his children) place of birth is unknown died ca. 1839 in Trigg Co., KY. will probated 1840 settlement date: 20 MAR 1840, Trigg Co., KY. married Mariah ____________ Children: PATRICK GUTHRIE.....thought to be the oldest as he was the first of the family to be listed as a tithable in the personal property tax lists of Halifax Co., VA. in the year 1811. Moved with father/mother to Trigg Co., KY. WILLIAM GUTHRIE.....was listed as a tithable in 1812, 1813, and 1814 personal property tax lists in the southern district of Halifax Co., VA....was not listed after 1814 so either died or moved elsewhere. VINCENT GUTHRIE.....born 24 AUG 1794 in Halifax Co., VA....married Sarah Stowe on 28 AUG 1817 in Person Co., NC....moved with father/mother/wife & family to Trigg Co., KY........died 27 FEB 1872 in Trigg Co., KY. JOHN GUTHRIE....born ca. 1795 in Halifax Co., VA......married Mary New on 2 JUL 1821 in Halifax Co., VA......did NOT accompany father/mother to Trigg Co., KY.....remained in Halifax Co., VA.....still there 1860 and beyond JESSE GUTHRIE.....born 11 APR 1799 in Halifax Co., VA.....married Mary Goode on 18 NOV 1819.....likely moved with father/mother/wife and family to Trigg Co., KY....with a later moved to Green Co., IL.....died 08 JUN 1868/69 in Green Co., IL. JAMES GUTHRIE.....enumerated as a separate, tithable householder in the 1822 personal property tax list, southern district, for Halifax Co., VA......enumerated as living side by side with Vincent Guthrie but too old to be his son....would have to be a brother, if related. IRBY GUTHRIE...born ca. 1802 in Halifax Co., VA.....married Nancy ________, married, secondly, Mary Ann Ladd.....moved with father/mother/wife and family to Trigg Co., KY... ELIZABETH ANN GUTHRIE....born 10 MAY 1801 in Halifax Co., VA....married Andrew Manning Warren ca. 1820....died 27 JAN 1871 in Lawrence Co., MO. In his will, Charles Guthrie left his property to his children who remained with him in Trigg Co., KY. at the time of his death and named them as Patrick, Vincent, Irby, and Elizabeth Ann Guthrie Warren. In my opinion, John Guthrie had remained in Halifax Co., VA. and Jesse Guthrie had probably moved on to Illinois by 1839. There is the possibility of one other son named William who appeared in the Halifax Co., Va., southern district, personal property tax lists from 1812-1814 in the vicinity of Charles and Patrick Guthrie; both of whom were tithables in those years. Lastly, there appears to be yet another son named James Guthrie who was in the tax lists next to Vincent Guthrie in 1822. Charles Guthrie and Nathaniel Guthrie both first appeared in the Halifax Co., VA. personal property tax lists in 1792, southern district (sometimes enumerated as living side by side), and were recorded as separate householders through 1808 with one tithable each. In the 1809 list, Charles Guthrie is recorded with two males in his household of tithable age (16) and in 1810, it was the same. In the 1811 list, Charles has two males of tithable age in his household and Patrick Guthrie is listed separately. In the 1812 list, Charles is recorded with two males of tithable age in his household with Patrick Guthrie and William Guthrie as separate householders. This occurrence remains constant in 1813 and 1814. In the 1815 list, Charles Guthrie still has two males of tithable age in his household, Patrick Guthrie is listed separately, William Guthrie is forever gone from the list, and Vincent Guthrie has emerged as a separate householder. In the 1816 list, Charles Guthrie shows one tithable in his household, Patrick Guthrie is a separate householder, and Vincent Guthrie was not listed. In 1817, Charles is once again showing two tithables in his household, with Patrick, Vincent, and John Guthrie being separate householders. In the 1818 list, Charles Guthrie once again shows two tithables in his household, Patrick and Vincent Guthrie are separate householders, and John Guthrie was not listed. In 1819, Charles Guthrie is listed with two tithables and Jesse Guthrie is first listed as a separate householder, and the only other of this family. In 1820, Charles Guthrie is listed with two tithables, and Jesse and Vincent Guthrie are listed as separate householders. In 1821, Charles and Vincent Guthrie are the only two with households. In 1822, Charles Guthrie is not listed, John Guthrie is listed, as are Vincent and James Guthrie (enumerated as side by side). In 1823, listees are Charles, Vincent, John, and Jesse Guthrie. In 1824 and 1825, listees are Charles, Vincent, and John Guthrie. In1826, Charles and John Guthrie are listed as the only head of household tithables. This is the last year on the tax list for Charles Guthrie so I'm assuming his move to Trigg Co., KY. can be pinpointed to 1826-1827. John Guthrie is the only potential member of this family to remain in Halifax Co., VA. and did so to 1860 and beyond. The names of listed children of Charles Guthrie on the list above that might be suspect are William Guthrie, James Guthrie, and John Guthrie. Other researchers have John listed as a son of Charles Guthrie so it would seem that the John Guthrie who married Mary New in Halifax Co., Va. in 1821, and forever lived in the southern district, would have to be a prime candidate. William Guthrie was recorded on the southern district tax lists from 1812-1814 and was not heard from,1815 and beyond. He was not of the Cason Guthrie family so he had to belong to either Charles or Nathaniel Guthrie, provided he had Halifax origins. James Guthrie, who showed up as a separate, tithable householder in the 1822 tax list, living side by side with Vincent, seems likely to be a son of Charles Guthrie and almost immediately hit the road for other parts. Also, he was not a part of the Cason Guthrie line and had to belong to either Charles or Nathaniel Guthrie, provided he had Halifax origins. Nathaniel Guthrie's last listing in the personal property tax lists for Halifax Co., VA. was in 1818 so I assume he had started his trek to Alabama after that time. Charles Guthrie, of course, left for Kentucky some eight or nine years later. Notify Administrator about this message?
