Below is what I have been able to put together on the family of John Guthrey, the Revolution War pensioner of Halifax County, Virginia. This family moved into the northern district of Halifax Co., Va. about 1792 and remained there. There was another John Guthrey in the southern district (b. ca. 1795) who was a stonemason and doesn't seem related at all to the Revolutionary War pensioner's family. Corrections are welcomed. JOHN GUTHREY of HALIFAX COUNTY, VIRGINIA Revolutionary War Pensioner DAR File # S8642 - Virginia Line Application Dated 25 SEP 1832 - Halifax County, VA. Born 1760 - Cumberland County, VA. Died 17 JAN 1836 - Halifax County, VA. Married Betty Ann Allen - Cumberland Co., VA. - 25 MAY 1785 Soldier was born in Cumberland County, VA. and enlisted for service there in MAY 1780.….discharged OCT 1780. Soldier was drafted back in service in FEB 1781...discharged APR 1781. Soldier reentered the service a third time as a volunteer in SEP 1781...discharged DEC 1781. Soldier stated that he lived in Cumberland County, VA. approximately 10 years after the war ended and then moved to Halifax County, VA. where he remained. William Hubbard and Charles Allen testified that John Guthrey has been a soldier in the war. This move to Halifax County, Virginia seems to be correct as a John Guthrey is first recorded in the Halifax County, VA. personal property tax list in 1792, and every year thereafter. John Guthrey died in Halifax County, VA. on 17 JAN 1836 and that fact can be found in Minute Book 7, page 154, Halifax County, VA. court records. His heirs at law are listed in that document and it states that there is no surviving widow. HEIRS ALLEN GUTHREY (born ca. 1788) (married Mary Bostick - 26 DEC 1812 - Halifax County, VA.) JOHN GUTHREY(JR.) (born ca. 1791) (married Edna Adams - 4 APR 1816 - Halifax County, VA.) Guthrey who died in Halifax County, VA. In 1871 as an unmarried female) FRANCES W. “FANNY” GUTHREY born ca. 1807) (married Archibald Rowlett - 15 OCT 1859 - after the death of his first wife, her sister Rebecca) ELIZABETH “ELIZA” GUTHREY McCRAW (born ca. 1793) (married James L. McCraw) (in the 1836 document, listed as living in Campbell County, VA.) WILLIAM GUTHREY (married Sarah Street - 31 JUL 1824 - Halifax County, VA.) (in the Halifax County, VA. personal property tax lists, there was a William C. Guthrey in the northern district among John Guthrey, Sr., John Guthrey, Jr., Richard A. Guthrey, and Allen Guthrey from the years 1825-1829, but no listings thereafter.) RICHARD GUTHREY (married Martha Toombs - 5 JAN 1828 - Halifax County, VA.) (should be Richard A. Guthrey) (last seen in the Halifax County, VA. personal property tax lists in 1834 and nothing thereafter) SARAH “SALLY” KING GUTHREY CREWS (born ca. 1785) (married Richard Crews - 2 JUN 1801 - Halifax County, VA. - father John) MARY GUTHREY WALLEN (married Thomas Wallen) Note: There is a bond in the Halifax County, VA. marriage records for Elizabeth Guthrey and William Hubbard - 21 DEC 1815 - father John Guthrey. This may be a first marriage for Elizabeth “Eliza” Guthrey who later married James L. McCraw and settled in Campbell County, VA. They can be found in the 1850 Census for Campbell County, page 195A, #390. Note: There is a bond in the Halifax County, VA. marriage records for Nancy Guthrey and Thomas Walton - 18 NOV 1823 -father John Guthrey, Sr. This may be the same person, possibly Mary Nancy Guthrey, found in the Minute Book 7, page 154 document of heirs that is hard to read and interpreted as Wallen. Of course, there could have been a daughter of John Guthrey named Nancy who died before John Guthrey’s death in 1836. Notify Administrator about this message?
