There may or may not be a connection here but it certainly warrants a second look. I've been trying to place a Thomas Guthrie for many years. He wrote a will in 1786 in Halifax County, VA. which was proven the following year, 1787. In the will, he names three daughter and only one son, Cason Guthrie. In subsequent genealogy, I know that the son, Cason Guthrie, was born in the year 1760 so Thomas Guthrie should be a product of the 1730s or 1740s. In the meantime,
another Thomas Guthrie was found in 1790 Rockingham Co., NC and 1800 Lincoln Co., NC. In the 1800 Census, he was then over 45 years of age making his birthdate 1755 or before. The Guthrie DNA project at FamilyTreeDNA shows that descendants from these two Thomas Guthries are very closely related (66 of 67 markers), so the common ancestor is only a generation or two removed from what is presently known.
From the Parish Register in Abington Parish, Gloucester Co., VA. comes the following entry:

Guttery, Thomas, son of Henry and Sara Guttrey, was born
FEB. 24 and baptised MAR 13, 1714/15. (note spelling)

This looks like the same people you're looking for that ended up in Cumberland Co., VA. I've saved the above entry as it may be useful to me in the future if these Guthries
can ever be sorted and arranged.
