John and Wm Guthrie of Caswell Co. NC, Gwinnett Co. GA and Laurens Co. SC

Can anyone further define who this John and William of Gwinnett Co. GA and Laurens Co. SC were? We know at least John enlisted in Caswell Co. NC. (It is believed they could be sons of Garret Guthrie as noted below)

Thanks,

Source: Abstracts of Rev War Pension Files Pg 1462 -"GUTRY- John R4398, NC Line he lived in CASWELL Co. NC at enl, appl 31 Oct 1836 LAURENS Dist SC aged 98 sol mentions his bro William GUTRY as having filed in the state of GA & stated he (John) had lately moved to Tumbling Shoals in LAURENS DIST SC , I did not find a claim for sol's bro Wm Gutry."

From my personal review of the pension documents, here are some additional details. First, there are conflicts in John’s age. Oct 31, 1836 the Judge in LAURENS Dist. stated John GUTRY had appeared before him and was age ninety eight (it possibly reads eighty-eight, hard to decipher). The documents proceed to discuss who he served under in the NC line. The next pages dated April 27, 1836 are from Tumbling Shoals, LAURENS Dist. and John's statement is that he had made an attempt for a pension but “never heard of his papers since he started, mine & brother Wm. Gutry's were sent on last year from the state of GA and I have lately taken up my abode in SC..Tumbling Shoals. He proceeds to say he enlisted in CASWELL Co. NC and names men he served under including Cpl Bullock, Cpt Alfred Moore, Wm. Foley, Capt Wm Goodman, Dan McFarland... He states " I am now upwards of 90 years of age". May 9, 1836 it shows papers sent to Washington. The last page of his Rev. Pension papers is a typed undated form showing John GUTTREY of GWINNETT Co. GA age 85, that he resided in CASWELL Co. NC when entered service...

My Other Observations:
1) It appears this John Gutry (Guthrie), and his brother William, had lived in GA for some period of time before John decided to go to LAURENS Co. SC about 1835. He stated he was “supported by the charity of old acquaintances.” Is he the same John who lived in LAURENS Co. SC in the late 1790’s and early 1800’s and was now returning there?

LAURENS Co. SC sources for John and William are noted below:

2) John’s age- If he filed in GWINNETT Co. GA at age 85 and we assume he filed in GA the year before (1835), then John was born about 1750. If 1836 he was actually 98 as the Abstract says, he would have been born 1738. If age 88 was meant, then he was born about 1748. I am not sure what he intended by the term “upwards of 90 years of age”. It could mean approaching age 90 or may mean over age 90??

3) It is likely this John Guthrie R.S. and his brother William, also a Rev. War soldier ( his pension records have not been located), were brothers of James Guthrie R. S. of Union District SC. John and James both enlisted in CASWELL Co. NC. All three may be sons of Garrett Guthrie b. 1724.

4) GWINNETT Co. GA references for John and William - As noted above, one of John’s pension papers reflected his residence was Gwinnett Co. GA when he had filed papers the year before. (GA has no 1810 or 1820 census available and I could not locate a John or Wm in the 1830 census).
May 8, 1827 a William GUTHRIE, R.S. of Cat. Hunnicut Dist, Gwinnet Co. drew some Carroll Co. Land in the 1827 GA lottery.
A Power of Attorney was found in MERIWETHER Co. GA courthouse….11 Jun 1827, Recorded 4 Mar 1828 John Guttery of GWINNETT Co. GA appoints his son Benjamin GUTTERY of the County of Walton as his attorney in fact to sell, receive and convey these lots: No. 13 in Ninth District of Troup Co., No. 169 in third District of Muscogee Co. No. 87 in Fifteenth District of Carroll County . Witness was Shadrick and Loll? FARMER. Is this the same John ??

What became of John’s son Benjamin Guthrie who was in Walton Co. in 1827? Is he the same Benjamin as 1820 Laurens Co. SC , 1830 Troup Co. GA and then moved into AL. my direct ancestor) NOTE: I also have a theory my ancestor Benjamin was son of James Guthrie of Union Dist. SC because a Benjamin is named in James’ probate papers.

1830 GWINNETT Co. census there is a David GUTHREY age 50-60. Is he a son of John or William?
