Hello, I recently found some information I didn't have on my ggg-grandfather, James Guthrie (son of James Guthrie and Jane Candler), and I thought I would share what I have with any other descendants of his who may be posting here. James Guthrie, b. 16 March 1801 in Campbell Co., Virginia, moved with his father to the Leesburg, Highland Co., Ohio, area prior to 1820. He married his first wife, Mahala C. Hardy (1805-1843) on 5 Feb 1826 in Leesburg, Highland Co., Ohio. James and Mahala had five children: 1. Rebecca Jane, b. 1 Dec 1827 in Leesburg, OH; d. 17 March 1910 at Fairfax, Highland Co., Ohio; m.(1) Nathaniel Cox in 1848 (marriage license issued in Highland Co., Ohio, dated 30 Dec 1847 states 'Mary Jane Guthery' but it is Rebecca; her obituary states she married him in 1848) and m.(2) Daniel Walker on 12 April 1855 in Highland Co., Ohio. 2. James Thomas, b. 29 Mar 1830 in Leesburg, OH; d. 11 Aug 1901 in Leesburg, OH; m. Maria Bernard Johnson on 14 Feb 1856 in Ohio. 3. Mahala Almeida, b. 11 June 1834 in Leesburg, OH; d. 11 Sep 1919 in Council Grove, KS; m. William H. Hadley in 1854 in Highland Co., OH. 4. Nancy Ann, b. 4 Jan 1837 in Leesburg, OH; d. before 1880 (possibly is the 'Anna Calvert' who died on 15 Feb 1879); m.(1) Sebastian B. Hixson on 13 Mar 1856 in Highland Co., OH and (2) Joel Calvert on 28 Mar 1866 in Highland Co., OH. 5. Sorency Bartlett, b. 17 Apr 1840 in Perrysville, Vermillion Co., IN; d. 25 Jan 1920 in Leesburg, Highland Co., OH; m. Sallie Ann Holmes on 27 Sep 1893 in Highland Co., OH. *** After Mahala died in 1843 in Vermillion Co., Indiana, James remarried in that county to Maria Callihan (abt 1822 - Aug 1849) on 18 June 1844. They moved back to Highland Co. after their marriage. James and Maria had one daughter: 6. Rachel Alice (aka Alice Rachel), b. 22 July 1847 in Leesburg, OH; d. 14 June 1903 in Highland Co., OH; m. William Thomas Covan on 4 Apr 1868 in Highland Co., OH. James and Maria may also have been the parents of "Charlotte Guthrie" who was listed in the 1850 mortality index for Highland Co., OH, who died in Aug. 1849 in Fairfield Twp. at the age of 1 month, but I do know not if they are for certain. Irregardless, Maria (Callihan) Guthrie died in Aug. 1849 in Fairfield Twp., Highland Co., OH. *** James then married for a third time, on 9 March 1850, to Sarah Jane Huff (1825 to after 1 June 1880), in Highland Co., Ohio. He and Sarah moved several times--they were living in Fairfield Twp., but on 17 Jan 1857 in a deed transaction with James Weaver, they are listed as being residents of Adams Co., OH (Highland Co. Deed Book 27, p. 244-5). However, they were back in Fairfield Twp., Highland Co., OH, by the time of 1860 census. The last deed transaction which lists either of them in Highland Co., Ohio, was in 1868 when Sarah Guthrie sold a lot to J. T. Guthrie. They are next found in the 1870 census for Webbs Prairie P.O., Franklin Co., Illinois, with their five sons and one daughter. Sarah is found in the 1880 census for Pendleton Twp., Jefferson Co., Illinois, with all but the two sons who had married in 1879 and 1880 in that county in her household. Sarah is listed as a widow in that census. James and Sarah Jane had six children: 7. Marion Delmar, b. 1 Dec 1850 in Highland Co., OH; d. 18 Oct 1915 in Houston, Harris Co., TX; m. Clara Louella Laird on 23 Feb 1879 in Jefferson Co., IL. 8. John Edward, b. 5 May 1852 in Highland Co., OH; d. 28 Dec 1937 in Houston, Harris Co., TX; m. Maggie Griggs. 9. Emerson L., b. Feb 1855 in OH; m. Anna ???. Lived in Evansville, IN, in 1920. 10. Sebastian C. Guthrie, b. 16 May 1858 in OH; m. Mary (or May) Ann Grant on 26 Feb 1880 in Belle Rive, Jefferson Co., IL. Died after 25 Jan 1920. Resided in Houston, TX, in 1920. 11. Frank S. Guthrie, b. 29 Nov 1861 in OH; d. 26 Feb 1939 in Seattle, King Co., WA; m. abt 1884 to Lucy B. Smith. His death certificate actually lists his parents as "Edward Guthrie" and "Ellen Huff", but his birthdate tracks with earlier censuses, and Sorency's obituary states that his half-brother Frank lived in Seattle, WA, in 1920. 12. Louellia, b. abt 1864 in OH. Died sometime between 1 Jun 1880 and 25 Jan 1920, as she was not listed as surviving Sorency in his obituary. James Guthrie died on 13 Sept 1874 in Jefferson Co., Illinois (most likely), and was buried at New Hope Cemetery just south of Belle Rive. You can view the information from his tombstone, and a picture of the tombstone itself, at http://jefferson.ilgenweb.net/cems/newhop.htm I have not seen James's exact death date listed anywhere before (other than that he had died in 1874), nor did I ever have a location for his death or his burial site. So hopefully that will fill in at least one piece of the puzzle for those of us descended from this James Guthrie. I am currently trying to see if there was an obituary for him in the Highland Co., Ohio, newspapers in 1874, since five of his first six kids were still living back in Ohio at the time of his death, and he had spent a good portion of his life in the area.
