My grandfather, Herbert Siegfried Guthmann was born in 1898 in Switzerland, and came over to the US on the "Amerika" from Germany, thru Ellis Island, when he was 9. He was with his mother, Amalia, 37, and his cousin, Margot, who was 13 at the time.
I know that the family briefly settled in Chicago, but then some returned to Germany, and then came back again(little fuzzy on those details.) My grandpa married Viola Lottie Richie, from Texas in about 1923. He died in 1986 and always said he didn't know his father's name.
I also know of the Jordan family (unclear of their U.S. location and relation)being connected somehow as well. Have seen pottery signed by family as "Guttman" too (name Americanized upon arrival?).
