1. Yes, the mother was the daughter of Per something so she was Persdotter (Per's daughter) according to patronymic naming customs in Sweden.

2. Västmanland is both a county (län) and a province (landskap) in Sweden. In this case it is a province.

Look at this province map of Sweden.

http://www.algonet.se/~hogman/swe_provinces_map_eng.htm

Look at the next page, which shows both the historical counties (which we need in Swedish genealogy) and the modern counties (which we need for travel, etc.) in Sweden.

3. I thought I explained Andersdotter (daughter of Anders) already. "Her father's last name was Karlsson so the entire family probably used Carlson as a last name in the U.S. Her last name in this record is patronymic, based on the given name of the father."

Children were seldom listed with a last name in Swedish records since their last name was obvious. (It would be patronymic, based upon the given name of the father plus (usually) a possessive s and then "son" for male children and "dotter" for female children. In this case they listed her patronymic name but apparently she used Carlson in the U.S. (Swedes quickly caught on to U.S. customs and didn't want to look as if the mother wasn't married and the children belonged to someone else.)

Wives generally did not take the patronymic name of their husbands when they married.

4. Nora lands means Nora rural parish (landsförsamling). (Norway is Norge, and they didn't come from Norway.) Look at the location of Nora parish on this 1992 map of Swedish parishes. (It's in the section called NORA.)

http://www.gis.scb.se/atlas/RikIndAtlas1992/showimg_en.asp?imgnr=54

It is vitally important to know the parish name since records were kept in the parish.

Be sure to post on the Sweden forum and make sure you link to this thread. Otherwise, the lookups will be much the same and surely you want new information and not just a repeat of something you've already learned. ;-)
