This is a neat website - amazing to find out how many Gunters there are, and it seems all are probably related somewhere along the line.I would like to receive a picture of the coat of arms if possible as well as any other information relating to the Gunter origin.
The family history we've been told is that the family originated in the Netherlands (Black Forest area) and journeyed to England in the 16th century with William of Orange. Some of the family emigrated to Canada some time in the 18th century and settled in the Maritimes. There were 3 brothers there at the time of the War of 1812 - 2 brothers went to the "States" and 1 brother remained a United Empire Loyalist. His descendents have gradually moved west and settled "Guntersville" in Ontario. My grandfather, Vernon Wade Gunter, and his brother, Eric, came to Manitoba in the early 1900's.Vernon was my grandfather - he worked for the telephone system and met my grandmother, Beatrice Elizabeth Craig, in southern Manitoba. They married in 1912 and eventually settled in Selkirk (just north of Winnipeg); their children all stayed in the area.Of their 10 children, only 1 is still living.Eric's family settled in Winnipeg and many are still there.
I would love to hear more about our history!
