My great grandmother was a Gunning, from Rosscommon in Ireland. She was a decendent of John Gunning, who lived for a while in Hemingford Grey in Huntingdonshire, near Cambridge, England. He had two daughters, Mary and Elizabeth, the 'Beautiful Gunnings' Mary married the Earl of Coventry and Elizabeth married the Duke of Hamilton, by whom she had two sons but was widowed at 24! she then went on the marry the Duke of Argyll and had another two sons and an adventerous life. See www.hemingfordgrey.org.uk.I wonder whether the John Gunning 1795-1880 on Pam Veenstra's followup is the same, his dates are about right. My grandmother was probably born around 1880 and great grandmother about 1850ish. There is a book about Elizabeth by Horace Bleackley 1907 'The story of a beautiful duchess; being an account of the life and times of Elizabeth Gunning Duchess of Hamilton'.
