David, your Gump family almost certainly comes, originally, from Frederick County, Maryland. There was a John Gump who left Frederick and went west, through Somerset, PA, and ended up in Ohio, and I'm pretty sure he wasn't the only one. I will check on that.
If not MD, then there was another Gump family living in Lancaster County, PA. (Actually, there were two, but one of them is related to the MD Gumps.)
I have heard that there is only one Gump family in America, but I believe that there were two; one from Switzerland and one from Germany. Both appear in Colonial PA, and it is difficult, at times, to tell the difference. I would start looking in Frederick County, MD and see if you see likely ancestors there. Most particularly, I recommend that you look for a book called "Moravian Friends in Graceham, Maryland" as a starting point. Another good reference is the Index to Frederick County Maryland, which lists all people in Frederick who appear in a variety of old history/biography/genealogy books of the area.
If you see anything likely, then you should let us know if we can help you further. In the meantime, I'll check on my database.
