Looking for the Chaffee family that Joel Gulick married into. - The surname of Gulick apparently derives from the Castle of Julich in Northwest Germany, which has since become the town of Julick. It dates back to 1350, and possibly as far back as 1100 A.D. For many years, there were struggles between Germany and the Low Lands, where the Castle of Julich would be in the Netherlands for a time, then in Germany. During the war that started in 1609 between Holland and Spain, Germany took several Dutchies, including the Dutchy of Julich, into her territory again. Later, the Treaty of Westphalia established the present boundaries between Holland and Germany. The words "von" (German) and "van" (Dutch) simply mean "of" or "from". In the early centuries, the common people were generally known by one name only. To identify themselves from others of the same name, they added the name of the place from which they came. Hence, Hendrick Van Gulick simply means that Hendrick came from the town or place of Gulick (Julich). The German spelling usually ended with "ch" or "che", as in Gulich. Most of the families who settled in Holland adopted the Dutch practice, and ended the name with a "k". Most also dropped the "van" from their name, resulting in "Gulick" being used as the most common surname. There are numerous variations (often depending on intermediate countries between Holland and the U.S.) such as "Gulish" and "Hulick". - Hendrick Gulick +Geertruyt Jochem Willekens 1653 Holland/1645 Hamburg, Germany Jochem Gulick + Jacomyntie Van Pelt 1663 Hendrich Gulick + Catherine Amerman 1700 Derick Gulick + Gitty Reed 1742 Gilbert Gulick + Nellie Williamson 1763 Cornelius Gulick + Mary Deats 1785 Henry Gulick + Martha Petty 1816 Jacob Gulick + Julia Hammond 1852 Henry Joel Gulick + Mary Elizabeth Tyler 1877 Henry Joel Gulick. .Henry Joel Gulick ; b. 9/2/1855-6 Burns Tp.,Shiawassee Co., MI; res.
