I did a quick search at google.com, and learned that there seem to be records for your grandfather located on Ancestry.com, which I don't belong to.
Evidentally, anyone can access Ancestry.com for FREE at a local public library, where a librarian can show you how to use the Ancestry.com database.
Using Ancestry.com, I advise you to try to find out the names of the parents & grandparents of YOUR great grandparents, Rufus W. GUINN and his wife Liza K. GUINN, both of whom were born in West Virginia, and then to do google searches for Rootsweb.com and Genforum.com on the names of these early ancestors.
Hopefully, you'll track down other people, your distant relatives, who have already done genealogical research on the early ancestors and have posted the results online.
Your grandfather Elden M. GUINN was born circa 1912 somewhere in West Virginia. In 1930 he and his parents lived in Wood, West Virginia.
Elden GUINN, (father of Buddy) is the son of Rufus W. and Liza K. GUINN, both of whom were born in West Virgina circa 1875-1876.
Elden GUINN is age 18 in 1930 and living with his parents; other sibllings are not shown in the household; however, there are numerous individuals with the surname GUINN in the immediate area, some of whom presumably are relatives.
As you attempt to trace early GUINN ancestors, be certain to remember that the earlier you go, the more likely that you will find records with alternate spellings of the surname for the SAME individual.
The surname GUINN in early records can be spelled in MANY different variations, some of which are: Guin, Gwin, Gwinn, Gwyn, Gwynn, Guynn, Guyn, Geuin, Gewin, and even GINN.
ALSO, do be aware that it is possible that your earliest GUINN ancestors in America MIGHT be Huguenots, as opposed to Scotch-Irish; I've found lots of possible French surnames with close spellings which are associated with the Huguenots at Manakinville in Virginia, and have read that there was a huge number of Huguenots who re-settled in South Carolina.
Hopefully, someone who is already knowledgeable about Buddy, Elden, Rufus, and Liza GUINN will come along and post directly to you.
Meantime, you might want to order death certificates for Rufus and Liza, because the death certificates frequently contain the names of both parents and the location of their birthplaces.
