GUINN Brick Wall Scaled?
Hello Everyone
I'm a Cherokee Freedman researcher. Cherokee Freedmen were ex-slaves of Cherokee citizens and enrolled as such during the citizenship hearings conducted by the Dawes Commission in Indian Territory West (now Oklahoma) from about 1898-1906. In researching Cherokee Freedman Lewis TAYLOR (enrollment card #CF-1142)I discovered what may be a brick wall for some GUINN researcher(s).
Lewis was the son of an unknown Cherokee father and an African mother named Judia TAYLOR. Lewis married a full-blood Cherokee Indian by the name of Eva CHICKEN. Eva was the daughter of Jennie CHICKEN & Wilson RIDER.
Lewis and Eva had at least four children: Rider, Mary, Shadeck, and Betsy. Mary was born ca. 1889 and she married a white man by the name of Abe GUINN in late 1904. At the time (April 20, 1905) Mary interviewed with the Dawes Commission her post office was Christy, Indian Territory. Mary's children (further research should determine if she had any) therefore would be of Cherokee & African descent as well as white. I've transcribed two Dawes Commission testimonies (Cherokee #7555) relative to the above and will share.
Hope this helps somebody.
