Early Virginia was staunchly Episcopalian and exiled both known Quakers and Baptists out of its borders. If they returned they were most often punished in different ways, the most permanent being hanged. If the exiled person went to live in one of the other colonies it was usually without being able to have any connection whatsoever with his family. It was as though he had never been born. His name was erased from the family bible and from all legal records when possible. Because no Episcopal church could be established without meeting strict requirements the Methodist church, formed by Episcopal priests, was eagerly given its place in the newly settled parts of the country.
