I have learned that Mary Engel Guillemot did not die in the 1880s as I had supposed. She seems to have lived at least until 1925, and resided in Washington, Iowa, the county seat of Washington County, in the last years of her life. I have learned that Frederic purchased 160 acres of land in Merrick County, NE in 1883 and the family (Fred, Mary and son John) show up there in the 1885 NE state census. In 1890, Frederic filed for divorce from Mary. The Merrick County courthouse is being remodeled and I can't get at the records right now, but a divorce would explain why the NE and IA families lost touch. It must have been a great scandal at that time.
