Hi John, Welcome to the board, I'm fairly new, too, but have a couple of suggestions others have given to me. I've found the 'people of the board' to be incredibly helpful. As for the pronunciation, my family pronounces it rhyming with build. If you haven't already, spend some time on the board's surname lists. From what I understand, much of the spelling and pronunciation has more to do with the local registrar's grammar at that point in history than the actual spelling, Guild could've come from many sources, including Gile, Guile, Gild and/or Guild. Say Gile slowly and it's real hard not to finish off with a 'd'. Whether some of the family were from the merchant guilds, could be. As for tracing your roots, in addition to the board, I would invest a couple of bucks (I started with only $50US) and visit, http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. There's a lot of free information to start off and you can 'pay as you go'. Scotland has posted much of its geneology information on the web within the last three years or so. I was able to find not only when my grandfather came from Scotland to Canada, but the ship on which he sailed. Census, birth and marriage records are available there. There are many more, but another I like is, http://www.scotsfamily.com. Check out the links - Now that I know where my family is from the Forfar area, I've even joined a couple of the historical societies to dig deeper. There's a ton of information out there and a whole lot of people who want to help. The others who had done my family's branches prior to my search have been fantastic - and from all over the globe! There are so many sources, the only thing you won't have enough of is time. This a lifelong journey, in my opinion. Best of luck, Bob Guild Kirkland, WA Notify Administrator about this message?
