Yes, Onesime Louis Guidry was White. There were indeed many such relationships in Louisiana amongst our Cajuns.
I tried to find out more on Modeste Potier b. 1825 but failed. I have access to ancestry.com. I did find the 1860 St. Landry Parish, LA census record where Onesime Louis Guidry is living with his aunt, Magdeleine Potier, and his daughter, Aspasie Guidry. Magdeleine Potier was md. to Antoine Guidry, son of Pierre Guidry and Marguerite Miller. I sometimes wonder if the census takers made short cuts and did not include all family members. Modeste and the other children should have been listed in the same household.
I strongly suspect Modeste Potier is a descendant of Charles Potier and Marie Magdeleine Ducrest. It would have been through a mixed marriage as Modeste was Mulatto. Maybe the marriage record for Modeste Potier and Onesime Guidry might hold more clues as well as the marriage records for their children. Often relatives were witnesses at the weddings.
I am listing below all the census records I found on the children of Onesime Guidry and Modeste Potier. I could not find Onesime Louis Guidry in 1870.
