Guffey Clan?

I have long been interested in family tartan's, my father's mother being a Lindsay. This summer I was informed by the a local tartan association that my surname (Guffey)might be a derivative of the the Scottish clan Macduff or Macphee. I was told by my father that our name was Irish and that at one time it was "McGuffey." My grandmother's religion required her to do the geneological charts of her children so I know that I am a descendant of one of the John Guffey's found to be in North America in the 1600's.
My big question is whether the name Guffey is Irish or Scottish. Does anyone have an inkling?
By the way, I found the information written by A. Joseph Guffey very enlightening. Thank you.
