Greetings, Ms. Miller Nugent,You stated that you're confused about your GUFFEY lineage.I will attempt to specify it as I understand it to be.Remember first that our ancestors were illiterate, as were many of the people in colonial days.The spelling of the name was entirely left to the person who recorded the documents in which the names are found.Those record keepers were English and generally spelled names phonetically reflecting what they heard the person say. Additionally, they weren't the best at spelling themselves! Remember, too, that our ancestors probably had brogues, dialects or accents which would have influenced what the recorder heard.I shall write the names using the spellings that I found in the records.Some of our ancestors' names were spelled different ways in different document and some were actually spelled different ways in the same document. When there exists more than one prominent spelling, I shall write it with a slash ( / ) between the two different spellings.I shall begin at the top with the oldest known "GUFFEY".
John Meguffey/Maguffie/Maguffe (the immigrant) b. ca. 1640 or before, in Scotland or England.He d. ca. 1676. He mrd. a widow, Elizabeth DAVONPORT, ca. 1665.She was b. ca. 1640 or before, and d. 1699-based upon the probate date of her will.She remarried Francis GRAVES after John's death. Then after the death of Francis GRAVES, she mrd. John DOUGHTY.John & Jane had two children:
1) Jane Maguffe b. ca. 1670-75.
2) John Maguffie/Maguffee/Maguffe, Senr. b. ca. 1665-70. His death date isn't known. He was mrd. ca. 1683 to Susanna EVANS MaGUFFIE b. ca. 1670. She was the dau. of John EVANS and his wife, Susanna.John, Senr. and Susanna EVANS MaGUFFIE had at least three children whose names were:
1) Jan (Jane) MaGUFFIE b. ca. 1683. She mrd. Thomas BLANTON Mar 25, 1697.
2) John MaGUFFEE, Jr. was b. ca. 1685. His death date is unknown.He mrd. ca. 1705 to Jane HENLEY.
3) Ephraim Maguffe/McGuffey/GUFFEY b. ca. 1695. He d. 1777 in old Bute Co. (now Warren Co.), N.C. He mrd. a woman known only as "Lucy"-taken from his will and deed of old Bute Co., N.C.They are believed to have had these seven (7)children:
1) Elizabeth MeGUFFEE;
2) Lucy;
3) Suckey (a nick name used at that time for Susannah)
4) John McGUFFEY (lived in Pittsylvania Co., VA.)
5) Henry McGUFFEY, Sr. (lived in Pittsylvania Co., VA.)
6) Joseph McGUFFEY (lived in Pittsylvania Co., VA.)
7) Ephraim McGUFFEY/GUFFEY, Junr. (lived in Pittsylvania Co., VA. & Wayne Co., KY.)Ephraim, Junr. was b. ca. 1740 in VA. He d. ca. 1805 in Wayne Co., KY. He mrd. a woman known only as "Nancy." Ephraim, Junr. and Nancy had at least eight (8) children.One of those, Richard GUFFEY, had this recorded at the time of his death: "18 Mar 1852 Rich'd Guffey 76 male b. Virginia parents: E. & Nancy Guffey." From what you've written you descended from Ephraim and Nancy's oldest son who was named after his father and grandfather:
1) Ephraim GUFFEY b. Sept 20, 1765. d. Feb 15, 1843 in Wayne Co., KY.He mrd. Sarah "Sally" DENNY b. 1775 in VA. d. Jan 1, 1849 in Wayne Co., KY.Ephraim and "Sally" had at least ten children, and you've written you descended from their daughter:
Allie Fair GUFFEY b. Mar 10, 1802. d. May 10, 1878.She mrd. Absolam DAVIS on Feb 17, 1820.
I hope this makes clear and provides you with what you needed.A. Joseph Guffey
