Since I posted my first message I've learned more about Green's disappearance. My information corresponds with your's, Micheal.I've talked to my great-great aunt, who is the daughter of Bessie, Green's daughter.(I'm descended through Bessie Guffey Criswell and her daughter Eva Criswell Abbott). My aunt told me the following story that Grandma Bessie told her.
It occurred on a Saturday evening; they were living in Illinois.Since their father always went to town on Saturday evenings and stayed there until bedtime, Grandma Bessie and her siblings that were still at home thought nothing of his usual departure on that seemingly normal day.
Grandma Bessie had saved some money and intended on using it to buy a windowshade, which could cover the unsightly view of the dust road outside their home.On that Saturday evening she tried to give this money to her father so that he could buy the windowshade on his trip to town, but he protested. He reasoned that she should keep her money; she might need it for something else. This later proved to have foreshadowed events to come.Green had already made his decision. He didn't take the money because he knew he wouldn't be back.
Bessie recalled that her father kept looking back at the house as he was walking away. That was the last she ever saw or knew of him.
Sunday passed by without any sight of Green. Then on Monday morning, the landowner, Mr. Savage, came to the house looking for Green. He asked the children where their "Papa" (that's what they called him) was, but of course they didn't know.Mr. Savage told them that he'd seen Green get on the 9:00 train on Saturday night.
Bertie, Mattie, and Hattie were already married at this time.General was 19, so he stayed in Illinois and worked. It's possible, but unsure, that Edna and/or Rosie may have stayed in Illinois with Mattie.Grandma Bessie was the oldest child still at home (other than Edna, who was somewhat retarded), so she put herself and the other kids on a train to come back to Kentucky. They arrived at Burnside and were taken to Monticello on the stage coach. The children were seperated and raised by different people.
Grandma Bessie never knew what became of her father. After she died our family found out that Green had ended up in Colorodo. He married a woman out there, but I don't know her name or if they had any children.
Note:I don't suppose there's any accuracy to the first story I posted that I'd heard.
