Ms. GUFFEY, you wrote that you wanted to trace this family all the way to Scotland, and although it has been more than a year since you posted your query, I believe I have the family you're looking for.We do go to 1670 on this continent--that's just sixty-three years after the founding of Jamestown.
Your Mack GUFFEY was John McDonald "Mack" GUFFEY, Jr. b. 1843 in Putnam Co., MO. d. Jan 20, 1879 in Unionville, Putnam Co., MO.He was the son of John McDonald GUFFEY, Sr. b. 1806 in Wayne Co., KY. and Sarah WILLIAMS GUFFEY b. 1820 in TN.--more on them below.
John McDonald "Mack" GUFFEY, Jr. mrd. on Jan 30, 1866 in Unionville, Putnam Co., MO. to Mary Ann PIERCY HEIRFORD.She was b. Oct 1, 1843 in Albany, Clinton Co., KY. and d. Aug 18, 1934 in Unionville, Putnam Co., MO. (her other husbands were: Washington HEIRFORD and Warren M. LOUIS).
John McDonald "Mack" GUFFEY, Jr. and Mary Ann had six (6) children:
1) Mary GUFFEY b. 1866.
2) Sarah Elizabeth GUFFEY b. Feb 12, 1867. d. July 14, 1955. mrd. on Sept 11, 1886 to Wilson TRENT.
3) John Benjamin GUFFEY b. Nov 13, 1868. d. ?mrd. on Nov 4, 1892 to Jessie THORN.
4) Nancy Caroline GUFFEY b. Jan 6, 1871. d.?mrd. on Mar 9, 1881 to Charles Marshall SUMMERS.
5) Fredonia GUFFEY b. June 1874. d. Aug 15, 1875 @ age 1 yr.
6) McDonald GUFFEY b. Jan 20, 1878. d. July 20, 1890 @ age 12 yrs.
(The above names and dates came from widow's pension application #413991 and the 1870 Census of Putnam Co., MO.)
Regarding "Mack" GUFFEY's father: John McDonald GUFFEY, Sr. was b. 1806 in Wayne Co., KY. d. 1876/78 buried: Stockton Cem., Unionville, Putnam Co., MO. He was the son of Henry "Hal" GUFFEY b. 1766/1771. d. Jan 22, 1874 at the age of 108. "Hal" was mrd. to Elizabeth "Betsy" ADAMS b. 1780/81. d. July 26, 1846. (more on "Hal" written below) John McDonald GUFFEY, Sr. mrd. to Sarah WILLIAMS b. 1820 in TN. (Sarah's brother, Grant WILLIAMS, was wagon master on wagons going west.)They moved to MO. ca. 1841.Their first child was b. in TN. and the others in Putnam Co., MO. They had nine (8) children:
1) Mary Ann GUFFEY b. 1839 in TN.mrd. on Dec 15, 1853 to William Bell LLOYD.
2) Elizabeth GUFFEY b. 1842 in MO. mrd. on Jan 22, 1857 to Hamilton DAVIS.
3) John McDonald "Mack" GUFFEY, Jr. b. 1843. -more on him written above.
4) Nancy Jane GUFFEY b. 1846. d. May 1926. mrd. on Mar 2, 1862 to Anthony FLANIGAN.
5) Thomas William GUFFEY b. Nov 28, 1846. d. Feb 27, 1928. mrd. in Sept 1869 to Mary E. BEARD. b. Jan 6, 1848 in MO.
6) James Henry GUFFEY b. Mar 22, 1850. d. in Green Castle, MO. mrd. on May 1, 1873 in Putnam Co., MO. to Sarah Jane STOCKTON b. Aug 11, 1857 in Putnam Co., MO. d. Mar 29, 1913 in Green Castle, MO.
7) Ephraim GUFFEY b. 1854. d.
8) Hamilton Davis GUFFEY b. Oct 17, 1858 (named after husband of dau. # 2 above) d. Jyuly 29, 1938.mrd. on Mar 4, 1879 to Cynthia A. WORLEY, dau. of John WORLEY b. 1813 & Elizabeth WILLIER b. 1818 in IN.
Henry "Hal" GUFFEY's dates and children are easy to find as they're posted several places including my book, WILLIAM GUFFEY 1786--ANCESTORS AND DESCENDANTS AND SOME RELATED FAMILIES.Hal was mrd. to "Betsy" ADAMS dau. of Joshua ADAMS b. 1746 in VA. d. 1819 in KY. & his wife, Phebe EASLEY b. 1748 in VA. d. ca. 1817 in KY.Henry "Hal" GUFFEY was the brother to my 3rd g. grandfather and name sake of the above mentioned book.Their parents were Ephraim McGUFFEY/GUFFEY, Junr. & Nancy. (more is written by A. Joseph Guffey about Ephraim in this forum under "Clarifying Ephraim GUFFEY" including a list of his children.)Eprhaim McGUFFEY/GUFFEY was b. ca. 1740 in VA. d. ca. 1804/5 in Wayne Co., KY.He and his wife, Nancy, accompanied their adult children into Wayne Co., KY. and settled there in the late 1790s.A record exists for one of their children, Richard GUFFEY, b. 1782 which was written at the time of his death in 1853 in Clinton Co., KY. with this notation for parents "E. & Nancy Guffey." (found on LDS micro film roll #216.821 of the Vital Statistics of KY.) Another interesting record which definitely identifies the father, Ephraim, as having lived and owned land in Wayne Co., KY. is the 1802 entry found in "Wayne Co., KY. Court House Order Book A. 1801-22".It reads: "Ephraim Guffey, Jr. and his negro Sam are exempted for the payment of County levies in the future on account of age and infirmities."This clearly was not Ephraim's son, (the only other Ephraim Guffey who lived there at that time) Ephraim Guffey b. 1765 who mrd. Sarah DENNY. He would have been only about 37 years old in 1802.
Ephraim McGUFFEY/GUFFEY, Junr. is believed to have been the son of Ephraim Maguffey/McGuffey/Meguffey/Guffey (all those spellings are used in old Bute Co., N.C. records for him.His brief will itself contains three of those different spellings).
Ephraim Maguffey/McGuffey/Meguffey/Guffey was b. ca. 1695 in Essex Co., VA. d. in 1777 in old Bute Co., N.C.He was married to a woman known only as Lucy.
Ephraim Maguffey/McGuffey/Meguffey/Guffey was one of at least three known children of John Maguffie/Maguffee/Maguffe, Senr. & his wife, Susanna EVANS Maguffie.John Maguffie/Maguffee/Maguffe, Senr. was in a law suite against his son, John Maguffee, Jr, and the court assigned the designations "Senr" and "Jr"to distinguish between them.Incidently, John Maguffee, Jr. mrd. Jane HENLEY, a widow, and their children and descendants continued using the patronymic designator "Mc" with their name.
John Maguffie/Maguffee/Maguffe, Senr. was b. ca. 1665-70 the son of John Maguffe/Maguffee/Meguffey (b. ca. 1740. d. ca. 1676) and his wife, Jane DAVONPORT. They were mrd. ca. 1665 and Jane d. ca. 1699.After John's death, Jane mrd. two additonal times.
This is as far back as this line has been traced, so, Ms. Guffey, with the name John Maguffie to search, if you find the names of our ancestors in Scotland, let us know and we'll all celebrate BIG TIME!We do know that John came to the colony of Virginia aboard an English ship.We don't know if he himself was b. in Scotland or his parent or grandparents were, but we know they descended from the Clan MacFie on the little island of Colonsay off the coast of Scotland.
