Dan~
I read your message...Hoping I could help, I searched the 1920 and 1930 US Census in Cohoes, NY for any Guerin families that listed their birthplace as Canada. I found three different Guerins that fit this description, so I wasn't going to write, thinking that wouldn't be much help.
But then, as I was researching an answer for another question (see my reply on elizabeth guerin), I realized that the census information certainly *could* help. Elizabeth Guerin's father David is quite possibly your Great Uncle.
The Guerin names I found in Cohoes that had been born in Canada were: Mathilde, Joseph, and Louis. Joseph and Mathilde were family "heads", while Louis was listed as a brother in law.
Mathilde and Joseph are listed as names of brothers that David Guerin has. I could not place the Louis, but since David, Mathilde, and Joseph's father's name was Louis, it's possible he's a brother as well and the person with the GEDCOM info I found doesn't know about him. In any event, I would say to be sure, you should find your father's birth record in the Vital Records in Cohoes NY. You can probably call and contact them to perform a search for you, since you already have the year of birth. His birth record will give you his parent's names. Then you will know for sure which Guerin he belongs to. I'm pretty sure you will find that he belongs in this family line.
If you want more information about this family line, you can see Sheila Guerin's very thorough GEDCOM at Anecestry or I think she has a website also. Her GEDCOM's title at Ancestry is "Guerin dit LaFontaine". I can still access those Census records, so when you get word from the Cohoes NY Vital Records Dept, I could find the correct family from the census for you.
Good luck!
